An Academic Voyage: Exploring Opportunities with Erasmus+

Recently, our PhD candidate, Eleni Salonikidou, completed her Erasmus+ traineeship at the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, in Lublin, Poland, under the supervision of Prof. Mariusz Barczak. During a two-month period, Eleni worked on the characterization and evaluation of several nanoporous materials (such as activated carbons) for environmental remediation applications, as for instance removal of potential hazardous pharmaceuticals from wastewaters, through adsorption. Detailed physicochemical characterization of the obtained materials was performed (like Raman analysis, N2 sorption, XPS, elemental analysis, SEM).

This traineeship provided valuable knowledge and multiple skills that will help the student during her PhD course. More specifically, Eleni obtained knowledge and competences regarding the various characterization techniques for the description of the properties of porous materials. The intern became familiar and learned how to use instruments and equipment for their characterization.

Eleni would like to thank Prof. Mariusz Barczak for providing this wonderful opportunity for the Erasmus+ traineeship and all the members of Prof. Barczak’s lab, especially PhD candidate Oliwia Kapusta and PhD candidate Marlena Bytniewska, for creating a welcoming, warm and friendly environment in the lab and in the office. Moreover, Eleni would like to thank Prof. Piotr Borowski and PhD candidate Karina Kowalska for their fruitful collaboration and all the great memories during these months. A big thanks also to Dr. Aldona Nowicka for giving me the opportunity to explore deeply the SEM technique and for her valuable knowledge.

Your kindness and support made my time here truly enjoyable, and I deeply cherish the unforgettable memories and experiences we shared.
