PRODUCTION OF GREEN TRANSPORT FUELS AND ENERGY FROM MICROALGAE GROWN IN GREENHOUSE DRAINAGE WATER (ALGAFUELS)

Project code

Τ2ΕΔΚ-00041

Total Budget

988.460,92 €

Duration

29/9/2020 – 29/9/2023

The project is implemented under the Action “RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE Β’ CALL” which is co‐financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union and Greek national funds through the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPAnEK 2014-2020) (project code: Τ2ΕΔΚ-00041)

Scope of the project

The main objective of ALGAFUELS is the development of technology for the production of “green” liquid fuels using microalgae cultivated in greenhouse wastewater as raw material, while utilizing residual biomass (after lipid extraction) to produce a wide range of chemical products (via catalytic pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction) and solid fuels.

A.U.Th Chemistry main objectives

  • Maximization of production/isolation of the oily phase of selected microalgae strains with desirable characteristics.
  • Development of novel non-sulfided hydrotreatment (HDO/hydroisomerization) catalysts for the production of “green” fuels (gasoline, diesel, kerosene) from microalgae lipids/oil.
  • Fast (catalytic) pyrolysis of lipid-free microalgae residual biomass towards the production of bio-oils/bio-crudes and high value-added chemicals.
  • Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of lipid-free microalgae residual biomass towards the production of bio-oils/bio-crudes and high value-added chemicals.
  • Assessment of the efficiency and economic viability of the new technology at industrial level (bio-refinery) and comparison with the production of corresponding fuels from vegetable oils as raw materials.
